Donizetti * All 33 Overtures _ from Adelia to Zoraida di Granata!

Four hours of Donizetti and no singing?!? Yes. Except for a brief intervention by the chorus (O nume pietoso at 3:19:25) in the Poliuto sinfonia, it's 4 hours of pure Donizetti orchestral glory! It's difficult to choose one these pearls as my personal favorite, but if I had to, it would be Fausta, which is unmistakably donizettian from beginning to end. Roberto Devereux the most exciting, Rosmonda the most fun. La Favorite the most elegant, a sketch for the overture of Verdi's Luisa Miller by the way (as Belisario's is a precursor to the orchestral introduction of Trovatore.) Curiously, the Parisina overture was simply borrowed from the one of Ugo Conte di Parigi (two different renditions here). Enjoy! The photograph is of Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo. Donizetti was born in Bergamo's Borgo Canale quarter and his first opera, Il Pigmalione (composed 1816), was given its world premiere at the theater on 13 October 1960. Adjacent to the theater is a park with the Monument to Donizetti.
